This book is a week-by-week guide on how to grow organically. Carolyn Harriot took a neglected property close to Victoria and turned it into a high-yield food garden, growing vegetables, herbs and fruit organically without pesticides, chemical fertilizers or herbicides.

The book is packed with useful info on seeding, creating the best soil, growing the best tomatoes, how to water, how to grow fruit and berries, pest control, the dangers of using chemicals in the garden, saving seeds, native plants, container gardening, lawn care, planting spring-flowering bulbs, using mulch, making special teas for the garden, and a wealth of other info too much to list!

The photos in the book, unfortunately, are in black and white but the rest of the info makes up for what was probably a cost-cutting measure. Carolyn also includes many recipes using the produce from your garden, not only edible recipes but also recipes for homemade fertilizer and organic pest controls.

This book was one of the first ones I purchased that introduced me to organic gardening (I have the first edition that came out in 2005) and I have used lots of the tips in the book many times over, so it has been a worthy investment.

Also check out her second book that I also own and have reviewed: The ZERO-MILE Diet – A Year-Round Guide to Growing Organic Food
